Form follows function · the mattress beat
The body needs a state where it can stop holding position. Most mattresses don't give it.
Part I · The surface
Switch surfaces. Watch the body settle differently against each.
The contact pattern that emerges where you touch and where you don't is a map of your current structure.
Part II · The spinal load
Pressure drops sharply from sitting and standing to supine. The ordering is robust across decades of measurement.
Intradiscal pressure — relative magnitude
Nachemson AL, Spine 1981 — disc pressure measurements. Wilke HJ, Neef P, Caimi M, Hoogland T, Claes LE, Spine 1999 — new in vivo measurements of pressures in the intervertebral disc in daily life.
Part III · Sleep architecture
Toggle fragmented sleep on. Watch the deep window collapse.
Hirshkowitz M, Whiton K, Albert SM, et al. National Sleep Foundation's updated sleep duration recommendations: final report. Sleep Health 2015;1:233-243.
Part IV · Light through closed eyelids
Move the slider. Watch the circadian signal degrade as ambient light rises.
Hattar S, Liao HW, Takao M, Berson DM, Yau KW. Melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells: architecture, projections, and intrinsic photosensitivity. Science 2002;295:1065-1070.
The three tiers
Intradiscal pressure is lowest in supine. Melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells detect light through closed eyelids and drive circadian signaling. N3 deep sleep accounts for 13–23% of total sleep time in healthy adults. These are documented findings.
Mattress firmness research is mixed — Kovacs 2003 found medium-firm outperforms firm for long-standing low-back complaints. The "firm is best" framing oversimplifies the literature. The floor as a daily reference, not a nightly bed, is the version that holds.
The hypnogram visualization is stylized. Real sleep stages vary night to night, by age, by medication, by alcohol, and by many other inputs. Exact Newton values for disc pressure that get repeated in pop summaries are simplifications. The ordering is real; the precise numbers are not.
